The city of Athens is known for its long musical tradition, including several local acts and events for many traveling musicians. Several of these musical acts perform at Ohio University and festivals in Athens. In addition, the folk song "Athens County" refers to Athens. Ohio, where the writers Joe Dolce and Jonathan Edwards attended college in the late 1960s. In 1973, the Ohio Valley Summer Theatre began a production called the Appalachian Green Parks Project. It features music, dance, and theater that are all derived from the Appalachian region. The group eventually won the Governor's Award for Community Action, released an album, and performed at the Sylvan Amphitheater in Washington, D.C., on Independence Day in 1974.
